This is a new experience exclusively for the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival! Join our Laboratory team for a New Make Spirit nosing session where you will delve into the analytical side of the whisky making process.
Dr Jennifer Whyte, Analytical Manager, and Donna Hammond, Laboratory Technician, will lead you through a nosing session of New Make Spirit liquids, the chemical compounds that create the aromas and the analytical tools they use to control them. And, of course, a nosing and tasting of the single malt whiskies highlighting the importance of ensuring the Quality of New Make Spirit.

Laboratory Technician Donna Hammond started her career with Diageo in January 1991 working at maltings, focusing on monitoring barley bought for harvest. Moving North to the Malt Distilling labs in 1997, Donna then completed her nosing training and became a regular and dependable member of the sensory panel, becoming a nosing trainer herself for over 12 years.

Dr Jennifer Whyte joined Diageo's central technical team in 2014 supporting distilleries with New Make Spirit Quality. Finding a passion for production, Jennifer then spent some time as distillery manager at Glen Elgin and Auchroisk distilleries before returning to the technical team as the Analytical Manager.

Jennifer heads up a team of thirteen analysts, like Donna, who collaborate with Diageo's four maltings and thirty distilleries to achieve the highest volume of Quality liquid, assessing the grain from the field all the way through to the whisky in the glass.
